WOODPEACKERS
Of all the birds, the woodpecker is the easiest to recognize. Even if you are a beginner, it is easy to decide whether it is a woodpecker or not.
Woodpeckers are always visible and often have a cheerful color. It is usually loud and its notes are clear and distinct. Its size and behavior are unusual, so every time you see a bird clinging to the side of a tree, "as if it was thrown and stung on it," you can safely call it a woodpecker.
It is not that all birds that cling to the bark of trees were woodpeckers, as tits, crested tit, nuthatches, brown vines, and some others prefer queens, and some wrens and songbirds usually climb up and down. The branches of the trees are down; But they do it quite gracefully, which is very different from the strange, assertive behavior of woodpeckers. Since the largest of them are smaller than the woodpecker, and none of them (except the smaller royals) ever show the yellow or red spots that always mark the male woodpecker's head and sometimes his Male adorns, there is no risk... to make mistakes.
Nuthatches are the only birds that can be confused with woodpeckers, and they have the peculiar habit of descending from a log by turning their heads toward the ground. Woodpecker doesn't do this; He can go down the trunk of the tree he is working on, but he will do so by jumping backward. An even more secure sign for a woodpecker is how it sits on and supports its tail.
Except for the tamarind and the little brown creeper, no other bird ever does this. His feet, with two legs facing forward and two legs facing back, are also a sure sign. Apart from the cuckoo and our only local parrot, we do not find this arrangement in any other North American bird. However, there is a small group of woodpeckers that have only three toes, and they are the only North American land birds that do not have four well-developed toes.
In color, are similar to the woodpecker family. With the exception of some young birds, the color is always bright and often bright. There are usually many clear black and white spots with red or yellow strokes around the head. Sometimes the color is "monochromatic" as in the red woodpecker; Sometimes they are in a narrow mesh, as in species with a red belly; sometimes in spots and stripes, as if fluffy and hairy; But there is always contrast, not a mixture of colors. red or yellow is applied in well-defined spots - square, rectangular, or sickle - on the crown, neck, jaw, or throat; Or streaks or streaks on the sides of the head and neck, such as the logo or comb woodpecker.
There are no rules regarding gender marking, as is the case with some bird families. Usually, the female lacks all the bright markings of the male; Sometimes, as in logcocks, they are, but in narrow spaces; Sometimes all colored spots except one appear on it like a flicker; And in some species, such as the red-headed woodpecker and the Lewis woodpecker, the coloration of both sexes is exactly the same. In the black-breasted woodpecker, sometimes called Williamson's pendant, the male and female are so different that they have long been described and called different birds. Sometimes it happens that a young female shows the male's colored markings, but retains them only for the first year.
Although woodpeckers cling to tree trunks, they are not particularly climbers. Some species, such as the shrew, are found on the earth and roam like grass in the meadow. Often we scare them away with tangled frosty vines and branches of wild cherry or clumps of poison ivy wherever they go to eat the fruit. The red woodpecker likes to sit on fence posts and wire poles; Both he and Flickr often burn, pecking and knocking tiles on the roofs of sheds and houses. Snapfish and some other species perch on dead limbs in search of insects, such as flycatchers; Flickers, and less often other types, will sit across the limb, and will not sit at length, as is customary with woodpeckers.
You will soon learn all of these points. You will learn about the appearance, flight, and calling of different woodpeckers; You will learn not only to recognize them by their names but also to understand their characters; They become your acquaintances and later friends.
This heavy bird with a straight, chiseled bill and pointed tail feathers; With their short legs and wide, flapping wings, their unmusical but unbearable voice and their heavy, wavy, businesslike flight, they are clearly bourgeois [8], a species of bird that is dedicated to trade and its enjoyment. No other bird has so much work all year round, and no one does it with more energy and understanding.
The woodpecker does not pretend to be an aristocrat, does not display the grace and influence of a professional singer; Even his cheerful clothes suited him less than any other bird. He is a master of the spine, a simple, hardworking, useful citizen who all his life digs holes in anything that needs a hole.
However, he is not depressed or anti-social. It has a vein of humor, a great deal of joy, and fun. We rarely see this, except in the spring, and then all laughter flares up in him for a while; He gets hoarse in his joy, and a melody he doesn't seem able to include in the song powers his business, filling Woodland with loud and harmonious rap. More than any other bird, it is man's friend and deserves freedom in the fields.
