Overview
Chhota
Vikram Baal Betal reimagines one of India’s most beloved
legendary partnerships by asking a simple yet fascinating question:
What happened before King Vikramaditya and
Betal became legends?
Set in the sacred kingdom of ancient Ujjaini,
this is the origin story of two extraordinary heroes—a fearless young prince
and an immortal spirit king—whose destinies have been intertwined for thousands
of years.
Combining Indian mythology, adventure,
mystery, humor, magical quests, and coming-of-age themes, the novel follows
twelve-year-old Prince Vikram as he secretly builds an army of children while
searching for the legendary Nine Divine Jewels that alone can save his occupied
kingdom.
Story Synopsis
After King Gandharvasena dies defending Ujjaini against
the invading Shaka Empire, the once-glorious kingdom falls under foreign
occupation. Although the ruthless Shaka King controls the city, he cannot
conquer Shivalaya Palace, where the late king’s family remains protected by an
ancient divine force unknown to everyone.
Inside
the palace live three royal children—Prince Bharthari, Prince Vikram, and
Princess Drishta—raised by their two loving mothers. Forbidden from leaving the
palace, the children spend years imprisoned behind its walls.
Unlike
everyone around him, Vikram refuses to accept defeat.
Using
nothing but intelligence and storytelling, he devises an ingenious escape plan.
He convinces his mothers to invite storytellers into the palace every day. Once
the guards become accustomed to their arrival, Vikram, Bharthari, and Drishta
disguise themselves as storytellers and secretly begin leaving the palace.
Outside,
they witness the terrible suffering of their people under the cruel Shaka
occupation. Starving citizens are whipped for stealing bread, fear rules the
streets, and hope has almost disappeared.
Instead
of raising an army of soldiers, Vikram makes an extraordinary decision.
He
begins secretly recruiting the children of Ujjaini.
Disguised
as wandering entertainers, the three young royals travel across the kingdom,
inspiring ordinary boys and girls to become “The Young Heroes of Ujjaini.”
Together they build a hidden resistance movement, proving that courage is not
measured by age.
Meanwhile,
another mystery unfolds inside the enchanted Betal Forest.
For
thousands of years, the legendary King of Spirits—Betal—has slept upon the
branch of an ancient tree while ghosts, witches, demons, talking birds, and
magical creatures live beneath him. Betal has not awakened for centuries, yet
suddenly he begins smiling in his sleep and repeatedly whispers a single name:
“Vikram…”
The
supernatural world is astonished.
Who
is this mysterious child?
Why
has the immortal King of Spirits been waiting thousands of years for him?
Through
the wise sage Acharya Sudarshan, the truth gradually emerges.
Betal
is not an evil ghost.
He
is an immortal historian chosen by Goddess Parvati herself to protect the
Paramara Dynasty of Ujjaini. Throughout history, he has guided every worthy
king by granting them the Nine Divine Jewels—sacred powers that can only be
earned through courage, wisdom, compassion, and sacrifice.
Unknown
to Vikram, destiny has already chosen him as the next guardian of Ujjaini.
While
exploring a secret chamber hidden beneath Shivalaya Palace, Vikram, Bharthari,
and Drishta discover the long-lost Nine Divine Jewels. Their discovery triggers
a chain of magical events, revealing hidden passages, ancient guardians,
forgotten prophecies, and secrets left behind by their father.
The
Shaka King grows increasingly suspicious as mysterious events begin to weaken
his control over the kingdom. Determined to crush every sign of resistance, he
launches attacks against the royal family, unaware that ancient divine
protection still surrounds the palace.
As
Vikram follows the clues left behind by the jewels, he finally reaches Betal’s
magical realm.
There,
Betal presents him with the first of many impossible tests.
Instead
of solving the challenge through strength or violence, Vikram chooses humility,
respect, and wisdom—qualities that surprise even the immortal spirit king.
Recognizing
that the young prince possesses the heart of a true ruler, Betal rewards him
with the first Divine Jewel.
Their
legendary partnership has finally begun.
Although
the kingdom has not yet been fully liberated, Vikram has taken the first
decisive step toward reclaiming Ujjaini. The novel concludes with the promise
of greater adventures, as Betal prepares to lead Vikram through eight more
magical quests to earn the remaining Divine Jewels and fulfill his destiny as
the future King Vikramaditya.
